LASIK vs LASEK Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery has become an increasingly popular option for those who require convenient corrective vision solutions. For many people, the idea of being able to correct their vision without having to wear glasses or put up with the inconvenience of contact lenses is very appealing.

When it comes to this type of surgery, there are actually a number of different procedures available. It is important for anyone who is looking to have laser eye surgery to decide which of these procedures is going to be best suited to them. Two of the popular options when it comes to laser eye surgery are LASIK and LASEK eye surgery.

Choosing between LASIK and LASEK eye surgery

With specialists, such as Optimax laser eye surgery, options are varied. Two of the common types of laser eye surgery are LASIK and LASEK. These two procedures account for the majority of laser eye surgeries and in many ways, they are pretty similar. However, there are a few key differences, which may help you to make a more informed decision with regards to whether you should choose LASIK or LASEK surgery.

The key differences between the two types of surgery include:

Access to the cornea: In order to perform laser eye surgery, the inner part of your cornea needs to be accessed and this is done in different ways in LASIK than it is with LASEK surgery. With LASIK surgery, a cut is made in the cornea to create a flap. Once the laser treatment has been applied, the flap is replaced. With LASEK surgery, the outer layer of the cornea is simply loosened and moved aside, so that the treatment can be administered. After the laser treatment the cornea is smoothed back into place.

Recovery time: The recovery periods for LASIK and LASEK surgery are very different. With LASIK surgery typical recovery is only 24-48 hours. This means you can get back to work and get back to daily life in a very short space of time. However, with LASEK surgery, the recovery time is longer, often around five to seven days.

Possible problems: As a result of a flap being cut, LASIK laser eye surgery can pose a greater risk than LASEK when it comes to possible complications. However, both types of procedure are very safe and any problems that arise can be easily addressed.

Effects on the cornea: The strength of the cornea is not affected with LASEK surgery in the same way that it is with LASIK surgery. With this in mind, those who take part in activities, such as contact sports, may find that LASEK is the most suitable option.

Even after looking at the key differences, it can be difficult to decide which of these two procedures is going to be best the most suitable. This is why it is often best to discuss your needs and circumstances with laser eye surgery experts.
